Frequently Asked Questions

Where are you located?

We have access to a local facility or we come to you!

We service the Traverse City, MI area.

Do you train other animals besides dogs?

Yes!  Though I have 20 years' experience training dogs, the science behind positive reward-based training is the same for all types of animals.

I trained my last dog using different training methods. Why change?

Because your relationship with your dog will be better!  Traditional methods use collar corrections, force, and harm.  Why would you cause pain to a dog to get him to listen, when there is a very effective method to get the same results without it?  Force-based methods can also have hidden consequences like encouraging aggression and fear.  Good Paws uses positive reward-based methods that are fun and build a stronger relationship with your dog.  They really do work!!!

Why private lessons?

Group classes are great but, have general lesson plans which typically include basic obedience, loose leash walking and some manners.  Group classes won't focus on behaviors or training you may want such as not baring at the doorbell, not jumping on people when they enter, good house manners, not pulling on that walk around your neighborhood, etc.  Private lessons can offer all that a group class can and more!

Group classes typically meet during the day/evening one time weekly for 6-8 weeks.   This may not work for your schedule.  Private lessons can fit into your schedule

Group classes offer very little individual instruction on how to train your dog. Private lessons provide one-on-one learning.

Why home schooling?

Experienced trainers can  train your dog faster than you can.  Home schooling accelerates your puppy's learning.

Experienced trainers can assess your dog's environment and recommend enrichment, stress relief, management and training to change unwanted behavior.

What is a Positive Trainer? Are You One?

A positive dog trainer is someone whom DOES NOT use force, shouting, harm, pain, or other “negative” forms of coercion to train dogs. Yes, I am a positive dog trainer!

I will never ask you to harm the relationship you have with your dog in the name of training.  Training should be fun for you and your dog!  I am a Karen Pryor Academy graduate who took an oath to train animals positively.  I am a member of the Pet Professional Guild, which is the International Association for Force Free Pet Professionals,  and a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers
